What is BMI?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a simple screening measure that compares your weight to your height. It doesn't measure body fat directly, but for most adults it gives a reasonable first indication of whether their weight falls in a range associated with lower health risk.
What BMI doesn't tell you
BMI uses one formula for every body, so it can't tell the difference between muscle and fat. A very muscular person can show a "high" BMI while being perfectly healthy, and an older adult can show a "normal" BMI while carrying more fat than muscle. Treat BMI as a starting point for a conversation with a doctor, not a diagnosis on its own.
Tips for a healthy range
- Track trends over time rather than a single reading — how your BMI is moving matters more than one number.
- Pair BMI with how your clothes fit and how you feel, not as the only measure of health.
- If your result is outside the "normal" range, a doctor can look at the full picture — muscle mass, waist size, and family history — before recommending anything.
- Small, sustainable changes to activity and diet tend to move BMI more reliably than short-term extreme diets.
